«Continuando la sua esplorazione delle relazioni tra lo spettacolo dal vivo e il cinema, Yan Duyvendak investiga con Self-service i rapporti tra testo e immagine: in che modo il testo inventa le immagini? Chi tra i due genera il senso? E come fa il senso a reinventarsi in caso di assemblaggi eterogenei, ironici o comici? Lontano dall’aspettata dimostrazione di una precedenza del testuale sulla visualizzazione, la performance ci trascina verso delle finzioni che sembrano moltiplicarsi fino alla vertigine. Queste voci fuori, per definizione destinate al fuori campo, si incarnano nella figura dell’artista divenendo racconti e creando una singolare intimità coi personaggi e i luoghi che si visitano. C’è della felicità a lasciarsi raggirare, a lasciarsi trasportare.»

«Continuing his exploration of the relationship between live performance and film, with “Self-service” Yan Duyvendak investigates the connections between text and image. How does text invent images? Which – images or texts – engenders meaning? How does meaning reinvent itself out of varied, ironic, even comic assemblages? Far from the expected demonstration of the precedence of text over image, the performance leads us towards fictions that seem to multiply dizzyingly. These voiceovers, intended by definition to be off-screen, find themselves strangely on stage, are incarnated in the figure of the artist, become stories, and create a unique intimacy with the characters and places that we visit. There is happiness in letting yourself be fooled. There is happiness in letting yourself be carried away.»

“Si può essere l'eletto per quindici minuti? Il tempo di un film dove ciascuno, proiettandosi in un supereroe o in un altro, ha l'illusione di essere ciò che non saremo mai; ci fa attraversare universi segreti e sconosciuti; ci rivela a noi stessi in sane catarsi.
Cosa resta una volta che la tela ridiventa bianca? Quando la luce del proiettore si è spenta? Una volta che Batman, James Bond, o Neo, l’Eletto sono scomparsi?

«Can one be the elect for fifteen minutes? Movie time, where everyone projects himself into one superhero or another, gives us the illusion of being something we will never be; makes us cross secret and unknown universes; shows us ourselves in the midst of salutary catharses. What is left once the screen goes blank? Once the projector lamp is turned off? Once Batman, James Bond, or Neo – the One have disappeared?
“My Name Is Neo (for fifteen minutes)” examines what happens when a film in which action and science fiction are mixed in a tornado of special effects is confronted with a human being, and, more particularly, with a human being’s brute physicality.»
